Cyrano de Bergerac News

With news of the Cyrano on Broadway revival, interest in the production has been further heightened by word that Kevin Kline and Jennifer Garner will be starring. Performances of the much-loved tale will begin in October 2007, under the direction of David Leveaux. Interest in the production has been further piqued by the posthumous inclusion of Clockwork Orange writer Anthony Burgess, who translated and adapted the original text. This top-of-the-range artistic outfit will surely spark a huge demand for Cyrano de Bergerac tickets.

The well-known story of Cyrano has made several appearances on Broadway, but the star power provided by Kline and Garner sets this version apart. The versatile Kline has proved himself as a serious actor and a comedian, through sterling performances in productions such as Hamlet and A Fish Called Wanda, for which he won an Academy Award. The onstage presence of the lovely Garner will be a draw in its own right for many, the sexy Alias actress being guaranteed to turn plenty of heads in this role as a beautiful French girl. The addition of the globally renowned mind of Burgess as writer/translater enhances what was to be an already impressive team of actors, producers, artists and directors.

The story of Cyrano (played by Kline) is one laced with romance and life lessons. Cyrano, a cadet in the French army, has a heart as big as his unfortunately oversize nose. When he falls for Roxane, a beautiful and strong-willed young girl (Garner), Cyrano is dismayed to learn that she is in love with Christian de Neuvillette (played by the Devil Wears Prada actor Daniel Sunjata), a handsome young soldier who loves Roxanne as much as she loves him. The intense shyness caused by Cyrano's large nose means he is too ashamed to reveal his real feelings to Roxanne, despite the fact that Christian is utterly lacking in the brains and heart department, while Cyrano possesses great literary talent, as well as bravery.

Christian, incapable of it himself, employs Cyrano to write love letters to his gorgeous sweetheart, and through this outlet he pours his poetic and profound feelings for Roxanne. Elegant words, such as, "A kiss is a rosy dot over the 'i' of loving", begin to light up the eye of Roxanne, and her mind reels. When the truth comes out regarding the author of the letters, we find that a decision must be made. But who will win the girl's precious heart, the force of Beauty or the power of Love?
